Renewable Energy Feasibility Studies

The communities in the Southeast Alaska region all rely on diesel power generation to some extent, and the average electricity rate is more than $14/kWh. In an effort to explore options for more affordable and renewable energy sources, Sealaska Corporation has undertaken two multi-year studies made possible by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy:
  • Southeast Alaska Ethanol Project
  • Comprehensive Renewable Energy Feasibility Study (Wind and Small Hydroelectric Study)
The ethanol project is still underway, so results are pending. The wind and small hydroelectric study was completed in June 2006, and the executive summary as well as the complete report are now available.

For more information on these studies contact Russell Dick or Michele Metz at Sealaska. To learn more about energy technologies contact the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.
