On May 8, Governor Sarah Palin announced the appointment of William Andrews, former Sealaska intern, as student regent to the University of Alaska Board of Regents. Andrews is a Juneau resident and a student at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS).

“William’s youthful enthusiasm and history of public service make him a valuable asset to the Board of Regents and the entire university system,” said Governor Palin. “His commitment to academic excellence and fiscal responsibility made him the top choice for this post.”

Andrews is an intern in the Alaska State Legislature, working in the office of Representative Mary Nelson of Bethel. He is studying Social Sciences and Alaska Native Studies, and plans to enter the UAS Master of Arts and Teaching program after graduating in 2008. Andrews has attended Board of Regents’ meetings while serving in the UAS student government as president and vice president. Andrews served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantryman from 1990-1994.

The University Of Alaska Board Of Regents is an 11-member board, appointed by the governor and confirmed by the legislature. Members serve an eight- year term, with the exception of the student regent, who serves a two-year term. Andrews joins other Palin appointees, including: Erik Drygas, Fuller Cowell II,  Patricia Jacobson, Kirk Wickersham, and Tim Brady.

Hallie Coleman
Hallie A. Coleman was recently awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal for her distinguished service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Between September and December of 2006, Hallie personally prepared and conducted over 300 briefings for airborne staff, ensuring that they had the latest threat assessments and were prepared to perform their duties.

Hallie also identified a training shortfall and developed new systems to train personnel on the myriad emergency actions if their aircraft was shot down or forced to land in hostile territory. According to the official Air Force citation, “her leadership, technical proficiency, and professionalism set her apart from her peers.”

Hallie recently re-enlisted for another 4 years, which will bring her total commitment to the Air Force to 10 years. “I do plan on making the Air Force a career,” said Hallie.
