When there is a question about civil or human rights violations, there
are organizations that help interpret laws and regulations, investigate

law an attorney practices.

Federal regulations require Alaska Legal Services to adopt priority
cases they will handle. These priorities are subject to approval by
Alaska Legal Services' Client Council.
Below is a brief description of the kinds of cases for which persons will generally receive appointments.
High Priority: These cases receive the highest priority for appointments and acceptance of cases.
Income maintenance and healthcare cases: AFDC, Social Security, food stamps
general relief, Medicaid
Shelter cases: evictions, problems with public housing,
utility shut-offs, denial of essential services by landlord (if tenant has
requested corrective action)
Family law: divorce if there are children of
the marriage and violence or child abuse is involved
Emergency wills: persons
over 60 or very ill
Limited entry: if permit is being denied
Prisoners' rights: if there is
a life-threatening situation or very serious complaint that affects many
prisoners
Native allotments, subsistence issues, federal trust property problems
and disputes with the government over land
All other cases may not be accepted. Referrals will be given if
possible. The maximum annual income level for an individual seeking
legal assistance is subject to the official Federal Poverty Income

Columbia Legal Services
