Joseph Nelson, Juneau, AK (Board Chair)

JoeNelson.jpg"ANCSA provided land, money and corporations for one generation of Natives. It is up to us to make ANCSA work for the generations to come. As Sealaska continues to work toward sustainable profits and regular dividends, I will encourage investment in our communities, our culture, our people and our way of life."

Joe has been a member of the Sealaska Board of Directors since 2003. He is chair of the Finance Committee, serves on the Shareholder Relations Committee and is a director of Sealaska Environmental Services, LLC.

Joe is the Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS). As Vice Chancellor, Joe is responsible for all student services, including admissions, financial aid, advising, registration, housing and recreation.

Born in Mount Edgecumbe, AK, Joe was raised as a commercial fisherman in Yakutat. He is a member of the Teikweidí (Brown Bear) Clan, eagle moiety of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe. After graduating Yakutat High School, Joe attended college in Southern California. He received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from UCLA in 1996 and earned his Master of Arts in American Indian studies in 1998. In 2001, he received a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School.

"As a fisherman, I will continue to practice our Native way of life. As an attorney and Sealaska director, I will do my part to preserve and enhance that way of life."
