A third-time Sealaska intern, Isaac Cadiente spent his summer working in the Corporation’s natural resources department—but spent little time in the office. Instead, Cadiente traveled to Prince of Wales Island to assist with projects including surveying salmon streams, inspecting tree planting and thinning operations and surveying logging roads.
Cadiente said he’s enjoyed the experience and knowledge gained through his Sealaska internships. “The atmosphere at Sealaska is wonderful,” he said. “It is great to work with other Native people who share similar values and thoughts.
“My internship at Sealaska has really opened my eyes to the rest of Southeast (Alaska). Spending time in outlying Southeast communities that I would not have seen otherwise has been a very rewarding and knowledgeable experience,” Cadiente said.
Born and raised in Juneau, Cadiente is the son of Carlos and Paula Cadiente and the grandson of Andres and Irene Cadiente. A descendant shareholder, he is one-quarter Tlingit of the L’eeneidi Clan, and his Tlingit name is Kaa Kuheit.
Cadiente starts his junior year this fall at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he’s working on a degree in environmental biology. He hopes to obtain a master’s degree and return to Southeast Alaska to play a role in sustainable harvesting of the region’s natural resources and preservation of Native subsistence practices.
