Over the past three summers, Brian Newman interned at Synergy Systems, which is Sealaska’s prototyping subsidiary.
“Besides helping out in the accounting department with the day to day paperwork, I have been put in charge of organizing all of the capital assets within the company. The goal by the end of summer is to have an up-to-date and accurate account of asset value and depreciation.”
Newman explained why he chose to intern at Sealaska: “I was really looking for a challenging learning experience before going back to school. Synergy has always given me a great mix of education and real life job responsibilities. It has been great to come back to a familiar company and jump right into important projects. I feel that I am producing real work everyday that is helping the company.”
Newman grew up in Seattle, Wash. He is Haida and Tsimshian, son of Don and Kathy Newman, and grandson of Don Mildred Newman and Ralph and Joan Mackie.
Currently attending Western Washington University, Newman finished his undergraduate degree last fall and is now pursuing a Master’s in Arts and Teaching. After Newman receives his degree, he plans to teach high school social studies, and eventually lecture at the college level or move onto the administration-side of education.
“After graduating, I think a lot of students ask the question 'Now what?' Unless they get an applicable degree, it is hard to figure out how they can use their education in the real world. Fortunately, this internship has given me a well-rounded and hands-on experience. I feel that I now have the skills and confidence to choose a career not solely based on what I can do. Not rather what I want to do.”
