A returning Sealaska intern, Alana Peterson worked for Sealaska Timber Corporation this summer.
At
STC, Peterson researched and worked to create a database of First
Nations, and other indigenous groups’ contact information, for STC’s
use in future business endeavors. She also researched Seattle-area
companies that STC could market their SFC certified-wood furniture to.
Peterson also attended various STC business development meetings with
the Nisga’a First Nation.
After her previous internship with
Sealaska’s Office of Diversity Solutions, Peterson said she was
delighted to be back for a second year. “It has been nice to take what
I learned last year in ODS and apply it to my work here this year
in STC, I really am gaining knowledge from my internship that you can’t
gain in the classroom.”
Peterson is from Sitka, Alaska and
is the daughter of Reginald and Gail Peterson, and the granddaughter of
Angel and Leadia Peterson and Howard and Ann Johansen. She is Tlingit
of the L’uxnaahadi Clan. Her Tlingit name is Gah Kith Tin.
Peterson
attends Charleston Southern University. Going into her fourth year, she
is working toward a double major in business management and Spanish.
After graduation, Peterson plans to travel to South and Central
America, where she will work on the economic development of rural
communities with a volunteer program, such as the Peace Corps.
