Bill Thomas for Sealaska Board

thomas.jpgDear Shareholder,

I am writing to ask for your vote so that I may continue to serve you on the Sealaska Corporation board of directors.  I was appointed by the board in April 2009 to fill the seat of retiring director Ethel Lund.  It was truly an honor to be considered for this position and I am humbled to have been selected.  I am among those directors up for election in 2009 and now I hope to achieve the support of the shareholders in remaining on your board.  I’d like to tell you about my career, my activities, and my commitment to Alaska Natives and Sealaska shareholders.  I hope to be considered deserving of your vote.

Career.  My professional experience has provided me with a depth of understanding and perspectives about the challenges we face as Native people and a Native corporation.  I have been a commercial fisherman for most of my life and have made a living among the waterways of our people.  I recognize the importance of subsistence for Alaska Natives and as a lobbyist I helped fight subsistence battles in Juneau to preserve our cultural way of life.  I served in the United States Army and am an in-country Vietnam veteran.  I have been a Representative in the State Legislature since 2005 and have served on committees for regional affairs, transportation, education, fisheries, and military and veterans affairs, and am the current vice chair of the finance committee.  The issues that face our people and our communities require understanding and cooperation, and I work hard to represent Southeast Alaska.

Activities.  I was born in Haines and have lived my life in Haines and Klukwan with my family, and served on the Haines Borough Assembly and on the Haines School Board.  It was an honor to hold the position of Chairman and CEO of Klukwan, Inc. and serve the shareholders of that village corporation, and I have also been a council member for the Chilkoot Indian Association.  I am a lifetime member of the United Fisherman of Alaska, and the American Legion Post 12 in Haines.  Just as Sealaska Corporation weaves business with culture, I have sought to integrate my professional expertise with dedication to an Alaskan way of life.

Commitment.  My life has been spent in service to my country, my community, and my people.  I now seek to dedicate my efforts as a director of Sealaska Corporation to further the corporate philosophy of protecting and growing the assets of Sealaska and providing meaningful economic, cultural and social benefits for our shareholders.  I bring over 40 years of professional experience and involvement in the community, representing the issues and concerns of Alaska Natives, to my role as your director.

This election is an important one for all Sealaska shareholders.  There are two resolutions up for a vote, and the board is asking for your support by voting YES for shares to Elders, and NO to director term limits.  Please be sure to vote your proxy and to encourage others to vote theirs.  I would greatly appreciate either your directed vote, or your discretionary vote in favor of the nominees endorsed by the Board of Directors:  Albert Kookesh, Tate London, Joe Nelson, Bill Thomas and Marge Young.

Gunalcheesh and Howah,

William “Bill” Thomas, Jr.
