Meet Tribal Member Shareholder Joe Zuboff

Our Past, Present and Future

Haa Shagóon | Íitl’ Kuníisii | Na Hlagigyadm

Joe Zuboff is the Clan Leader for the Raven House in Angoon, Alaska. His role reflects the values that have been passed down for generations. Zuboff succeeded his uncle as Clan Leader and says his brothers mentored him about important Native traditions. He now passes down these same traditions to his nephew, Johnny, the future Clan Leader. By living his Native values, Zuboff contributes to the betterment of his community and his clan.

Zuboff recalls he wasn’t always deeply connected with his culture. View video below and hear his story.

Zuboff contributes to the community in many ways. He was asked to sit on the Council of Traditional Scholars, a panel of Clan Leaders and Elders with extensive knowledge of Southeast Native languages and culture. He sits on the board for Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc. (DIPAC) and gives his time to the Rainforest Recovery Center at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Zuboff recently retired as a 20-year volunteer with Capital City Fire/Rescue (CCFR).

While serving with CCFR, Zuboff noticed there were few Alaska Natives volunteering. He says the skills obtained through volunteering and the friendships developed with CCFR have been invaluable to his career.
