Haa Aaní, LLC Community Cultural Carving Program

kake.jpgSealaska’s newest subsidiary Haa Aani, LLC is a board-driven initiative to sustain and develop new Southeast economies, particularly in our rural communities. Haa Aani, LLC’s current activities include renewable energy, mariculture, construction aggregates, development of a community development financial institution, and community collaboration.

Haa Aani, LLC is led by Sealaska shareholder Russell Dick of Hoonah. His team includes project coordinators Katherine Eldemar, Nathan Soboleff and Anthony Lindoff, and Alaska Coastal Aggregates general manager, Bill Bennett.

Through a collaborative effort with Sealaska Timber Corporation (STC), Haa Aani, LLC is supporting local artists with carving materials. Prior to Alaska Coastal Aggregates, Bill Bennett worked directly for STC and worked out of the Prince of Wales office. While at STC, Bennett would collect carving materials for donation requests around the region and has continued to ensure carving materials are made available. “The program is really taking off,” said Bill Bennett. “We are filling cultural carving needs all over Southeast. I’m just thrilled to contribute to the success of the program.”

One recent effort helped the community of Kake, Alaska celebrate 100 years. Kake students were provided carving materials and created canoe plaques that were presented to dignitaries attending the three-day event held in January 2012.

Sealaska is proud to contribute to local art programs in the region.
