Sealaska Forest Management

MYTH: Sealaska clear-cuts all of its lands.

FACT: Almost 60% of Sealaska harvesting takes place by helicopter logging.

Sealaska owns approximately 290,000 acres.

  • Approximately 189,000 acres have been harvested through 2009
  • Approximately 108,000 acres have been partial harvested
  • Approximately   80,500 acres have been even-age harvested

“This is vastly different than what has been disseminated by The Wilderness Society – they accuse Sealaska of clear-cutting 320,000 acres, more land than what we own.”
~Sealaska Director Byron Mallott, before the House Committee on Natural Resources, March 17, 2010

Clear-cut harvesting on many parcels is the most healthy form of extraction for forest regrowth and habitat browse – many forms of selective harvest are more invasive and destructive to soil integrity and can affect healthy regrowth.
