Shareholder Action Alert on Sealaska Final Entitlement Land Legislation

haa-aani.jpg

Dear Tribal Member Shareholder:

U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski needs to hear from you!

There are some who would like to lock away our historic and sacred lands, regardless of the promise made to our people almost 40 years ago by the U.S. Congress.

Please email U.S. Senator Murkowski telling her you SUPPORT her legislation S.881 to finalize Sealaska's land entitlement. Her bill will return to Sealaska economically and culturally significant lands promised to Southeast Alaska Natives almost 40 years ago, and ensures that:

  • The Tongass will GAIN, not lose, roadless and old growth reserve acreage
  • Unprecedented public access will be explicitly guaranteed in federal law
  • Hundreds of culturally significant sacred and historic sites will be returned to Native ownership – forever
  • New green energy and eco-tourism projects will address critical community needs of affordable energy and sustainable jobs

Please contact the Alaska congressional delegation today and voice your support for HR 2099 and S.881!
Your voice can make a difference!

To ensure your elected officials get the most important messages, we recommend the following format:

Introduce yourself as a concerned Sealaska tribal member shareholder. Be respectful but firm and mention the following points:

1) We are grateful for the Alaska congressional delegation’s support of Sealaska’s final land entitlement legislation.

2) Southeast Alaska Natives have been waiting almost 40 years for the promise of ANCSA to be fulfilled.

3) We are not asking for any more land than what we are entitled to under federal law.
