What is the best solution for the high cost of energy in
Southeast Alaska and Indian Country? The Indian Country Renewable Energy
Consortium was recently formed to address the country’s energy crisis in rural
communities.
The consortium’s primary goal is to present solutions to the
obstacles, which have inhibited renewable energy and transmission development.
Reducing energy costs, participating in greener energy and ensuring a Native
and American Indian voice in the emerging green economy are goals of the
Coalition. The consortium’s founding board includes Alaska Native and
Sealaska President and CEO, Chris E. McNeil, Jr.
According to the group, there are active renewable development
initiatives ranging from wind, solar and biomass projects to transmission
projects to green job training. “Alaska Natives are at ground zero of climate
change and energy crisis,” said McNeil. “Electricity in some rural Alaska
communities is costing ten times more than in the continental U.S. With the
help of the newly formed consortium, we can create new and sustainable
economies.”
