Sealaska Tribal Member Shareholders Convene for 2009 Annual Meeting

Sitka, Alaska - Sealaska tribal member shareholders gathered today for the Corporation’s 36th Annual Meeting to elect five directors and to vote on two resolutions.

Tribal member shareholders have been voting by proxy since early May, with nearly 75% of voting shares represented at the meeting in person or by proxy.

Shareholders voted to retain incumbent directors Albert Kookesh, Bill Thomas, Joe Nelson and Tate London. Newly elected director Barbara Cadiente-Nelson was also elected to the board.  Terms will expire at the annual meeting in 2012.

Cadiente-Nelson, 55, is the vice president of the F/V Star of the Sea, Inc. in Juneau. She has a Masters of Arts in teaching, from the University of Alaska Southeast and a Bachelors of Arts in communications from Western Illinois University.

The Sealaska Board of Directors established a youth board advisory position. “Haa Shagoon is one of the guiding Native values for Sealaska’s board and management which recognizes the bonds between our ancestors, current generation and future generations,” said Dr. Rosita Worl, Sealaska board vice chair. “The Board recognizes the newest generation of shareholders has much to contribute and participants will certainly develop leadership skills throughout the experience.”

The board appointed position is for one year and new youth board advisors will be announced at each annual meeting.  The first appointee was announced during he 2009 Annual Meeting. After careful consideration the board elected Megan Gregory, whose family is from Kake, to serve in the inaugural position.  As youth advisor, Ms. Gregory will provide input and gain board membership training.

In other annual meeting business, Shareholders approved life estate stock for elders. The resolution authorizes the issuance of “Class E”, non-voting stock to each original shareholder.

A resolution recommending term limits for directors was rejected by voting shareholders.

Over 300 tribal member shareholders and their guests attended the meeting in person with another 134 households attending via live webcast.
