Tlingit Canoe Plies the Waters of Our Nation's Capitol

A traditional Tlingit cedar canoe journeyed the Potomac River in Washington D.C. The 26-foot canoe, carved by Tlingit artist and Sealaska shareholder Doug (Kevin) Chilton was gifted to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

The full size canoe was paddled up the Potomac River by the Sealaska board. Sealaska Board Chair Albert Kookesh and Director Clarence Jackson lead a formal naming of the canoe and gifting ceremony on the banks of the river. Watch a video of Sealaska's leadership and the canoe in D.C. below.

Tlingit artist Doug Chilton carved the canoe named Raven from a cedar tree donated by the Sealaska Corporation (Watch the video of Sealaska leadership at the tree ceremony below.). The Raven canoe will share Tlingit culture and legend.  At the prow of the canoe is a carved raven holding the sun that is carved out of copper.

Doug Chilton lives in Juneau, Alaska.  He is of the Raven moiety Deisheetaan (Beaver) Clan, Raven House of Angoon, Alaska. Chilton was assisted by Tlingit artist Brian Chilton.

Sealaska Heritage Institute commissioned the 26-foot cedar carved canoe. Its presence at the Smithsonian will educate visitors about the relationship Southeast Alaska Natives have with the ocean and its resources. An estimated seven million people visit the museum each year.

The Raven canoe will be on display beginning September 27, 2008 when the Smithsonian’s Ocean Hall opens. The canoe will be suspended from the ceiling alongside a life-size model of an endangered northern right whale.
