Director Ed Thomas
recently spoke at the Alaska State Museum in Juneau where Gov. Palin
signed House Bill 259, which established Alaska History Week as the
first week of March. Students from Juneau-Douglas High School witnessed
the signing and listened to Native leader Thomas and lifelong Alaskan
Judy Ripley understand the importance of Alaska Natives and our
significance to the state’s history.
Thomas engaged students
with questions about local landmarks in an effort to illustrate the
rich history of Juneau’s Taku and Auk tribes.
Thomas
is Tlingit and has served on Sealaska’s board since 1993. He is
president of Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of
Alaska (CCTHITA) and vice president of National Congress of American
Indians (NCAI).
