Sealaska Shareholder Honored by Alaska Territorial Guard

Sealaska shareholder and World War II veteran, Sigurd H. Edwards, 81, was formally honored and discharged from the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) in a celebration at ANB Hall in Yakutat last month. According to him, Edwards has waited 62 years to be formally honored and discharged from the ATG, and it was well worth the wait.

Approximately 100 friends, family, civic officials, Tlingit dancers, and military personnel, who arrived in a special military plane, attended the ceremony.

"It is my extremely humble honor to be here to acknowledge this important day in which we formally discharge Pvt. Sigurd H. Edwards from the Alaska Territorial Guard," said Brigadier General Thomas H. Katkus, assistant adjunct general of the Alaska Army National Guard.

Sealaska Directors Byron Mallott and Clarence Jackson also helped to honor Edwards on behalf of Sealaska Corporation, along with other Guard members.

Over the past few years, ATG members have been formally discharged and recognized for their service at events held across Alaska.
