Record Number of Native Americans Voted Into Office
Across the country, Native Americans are being elected into state legislatures in record numbers. Currently there are 64 Native Americans in 14 different states, with Oklahoma leading all states with 18 Native legislators. Alaska and Montana are tied for second with nine each.
The record numbers are primarily due to a renaissance of political activism by Native Americans, according to an article in the Seattle Times. Groups such as the National Congress of American Indians—whose executive director, Jacqueline Johnson, is also a board member of Sealaska—are mobilizing Native voters and empowering candidates to be more involved.
“This is the most we’ve ever had,” said Johnson. “This generation of Alaskans are setting the bar higher, and by their success they are proving that Natives can and should be determining laws and policy.”
