“Sealaska is proud to support the Juneau Housing First Collaborative project, that aims to alleviate homelessness in Juneau,” said Sealaska Chair Joe Nelson. “As Native people, our collective identity often takes precedence over our individual identities. Homelessness is an issue that must be addressed as a collective. As the first peoples of this land, we applaud the efforts of everyone involved in this project. On behalf of Sealaska, we are happy to do our part.”
Juneau Community Foundation is pleased to announce a new partner for the Juneau Housing First Project. Sealaska has committed $25,000 towards facility construction. Housing First will provide 32 units of permanent supportive housing and a community facility for Juneau's most vulnerable, chronically homeless adults. A tour of the project took place on November 17, 2016. See tour images here.
The generous Sealaska donation combined with many individual contributions over the past two years bring the total raised to $50,000 of the $200,000 needed in local contributions.
In addition to this donation, the Benito and Francis C. Gaguine Foundation have pledged a $45,000 matching grant to encourage community fundraising for the project. The next $45,000 raised in Juneau will be matched, dollar for dollar by this pledge. “Juneau supports this project and the housing option it will provide for our most vulnerable, homeless adults,” stated, Steve Sorensen, Juneau Housing First Project Board Chairman. “We are counting on the people and businesses of Juneau to help us meet this match so we can finish the project on time.”
Juneau Community Foundation provides support for the Juneau Housing First Project with expertise, administrative assistance, and fundraising. “We are proud to have been working with Housing First from the planning stage, and helping to ensure the opening of its doors in the spring of 2017,” said Juneau Community Foundation board member, Reed Stoops.
